The Challenge
Durham Public Schools wants students to relax, have fun over the summer and READ! Studies show that when children do not read over the summer, they risk entering the next school year behind grade level. Up to three months of education can be lost each summer, and students’ reading levels can decrease by up to 25 percent.
This all can be prevented by reading four books over each summer. Research indicates that students who read four books over the summer not only prevent the “summer slide,” but actually can enter the next school year above grade level.
The Solution
The BookMark project is a great way for students, businesses, civic organizations and other community groups to leave their mark on the future by providing books for elementary students, some of whom may not have books in the home. Durham Public Schools has initiated the BookMark project to encourage students and adults to contribute new and gently used books to children in kindergarten through fifth grade. “Leave Your Mark…BookMark” offers various ways for books to be given to DPS for students who may not have reading materials in the home.
